A Level and GCSE Exams in Autumn 2020

Aug 6, 2020

Following the cancellation of A level and GCSE exams for the summer 2020 series, Ofqual have confirmed that an autumn exam series will be held in October 2020 for A levels and November 2020 for GCSEs.

A full exam series will be run by all exam boards in the autumn and will follow the same number of exams and same format as the summer 2020 exam series would have had. Only students who had entered for, or have evidence of their intention to enter for, the summer exams will be eligible to take exams in the autumn.

The results for the autumn series will be based on students’ exam performance alone, which means that any non-examined assessment, such as coursework, will not count towards their grade. The only exceptions to this are GCSE and A level Art and Design: for these qualifications, students will be required to complete a new task under normal supervised conditions and this will be set and marked by the exam board. With regards to separate endorsements for A level sciences and GCSE English Language, students will be able to carry forward their endorsement grades.

A level exams are scheduled to run from Monday 5 October to Friday 23 October, and GCSEs from Monday 2 November to Monday 23 November. It has also been proposed that the normal November exam series for GCSE Mathematics and English Language will be moved to January 2021.

There is no confirmed results date as of yet, but exam boards believe that A level results will be issued before Christmas. If a student achieves a higher grade from the autumn exams than they did from their calculated summer grade, they will be able to request a replacement certificate from the exam board to show the higher grade at no additional cost.

If a student is unhappy with their grade from the autumn exam series, they will be able to go through the normal review of marking and appeal arrangements as they would in any other exam series.

Westminster Tutors is keeping the situation closely under review so that we are able to offer autumn retakes to our own students.

How can Westminster Tutors help me?

We may also be able to offer external students online revision courses for the autumn A level retakes. All of our teaching will be one-to-one and will be adapted according to your needs and the areas you need to catch up on.

The alternative option would be to apply for one of our Sept-June or Jan-June A level retake courses. Our students get fabulous results with last year’s A level retake students improving on average by 1.8 grades and 76% of our students going on to Russell Group or Ivy League universities – we really believe we are the best!
