Science Practicals

May 10, 2026

It has been a real pleasure to see our science students complete their practical endorsement work this year, and I would like to take this opportunity to recognise the commitment and maturity they have shown throughout the process. The practical endorsement is not something that can be achieved through last-minute revision. It requires consistency, care, and a willingness to engage properly with experimental work over time. Our students have done exactly that,
and they should be proud of what they have achieved.

Across Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, students are required to demonstrate a range of practical competencies, from accurate measurement and safe working, through to analysis, evaluation, and the ability to draw meaningful conclusions from data. These are not only essential for success at A level, but also form the foundation for further study in science and related disciplines. Developing these skills properly takes time and, importantly, the right environment.

What makes our approach different is the level of individualisation we are able to offer. Practical work at the college is delivered within our one to one teaching model, which allows each student to engage fully with the process. Rather than following a set routine within a large group, students are guided through each stage of an investigation with close support from their teacher. This means that misconceptions can be addressed immediately, techniques can be refined in real time, and students are able to build both confidence and independence as they progress.

For many of our students, this approach is particularly important. Some arrive having had limited access to practical work in previous settings, while others may lack confidence in laboratory environments. By structuring practical work carefully and providing consistent support, we are able to ensure that all students can meet the required standard, while also developing a genuine understanding of what they are doing and why.

We were pleased to welcome a recent monitoring visit, which reviewed our delivery of the practical endorsement. The outcome confirmed that our provision is compliant and that our processes for teaching, assessing, and recording practical work are robust. More importantly, it recognised that students are having a meaningful and positive experience, developing the skills they need for the next stage of their education.

Ultimately, the practical endorsement is about far more than meeting a requirement. It is about learning how to think scientifically, how to approach problems
methodically, and how to evaluate evidence with care. These are skills that will serve our students well beyond their A levels, whether they go on to study science at university or move into other fields.

My thanks go to our students for their hard work and to our teachers for the care and expertise they bring to this aspect of the curriculum. It is a significant achievement, and one that reflects the ethos of the college.
