Charlie Walker

Sep 25, 2025

This term Westminster Tutors welcomed Charlie Walker, award-winning British explorer, author and international keynote speaker, to give a guest
talk that left a lasting impression on all who heard him. Charlie has spent more than fifteen years travelling over 60 000 miles using only human power — on foot, by bicycle, by ski, by kayak and even in a dugout canoe — across some of the most remote and challenging places on earth, from
the Arctic tundra and the Gobi desert to the jungles of Papua New Guinea and the Sahara. His experiences have shaped not only his understanding of the world’s diverse landscapes and cultures but also the themes that he shared with our students: motivation, determination and resilience.

Charlie’s talk went far beyond tales of adventure. Through vivid storytelling and candid reflection, he helped students see motivation not as a fleeting feeling but as a disciplined commitment to one’s goals. Drawing on stories from his long-distance expeditions, he explained how determination carried him through blistering deserts and freezing tundra alike, and how confronting adversity taught him that setbacks are not dead-ends but opportunities to learn and to grow. These messages were delivered with clarity, humour and humility, prompting students to think deeply about how they can cultivate a resilient mindset in their own lives.

One of the most impactful elements of Charlie’s talk was his emphasis on embracing challenge rather than avoiding it. He encouraged students to set ambitious goals, to expect difficulties along the way, and most importantly to persist when things are tough. By sharing personal stories of weathering isolation, exhaustion and uncertainty in some of the harshest environments on the planet, Charlie made these abstract qualities of resilience and grit feel tangible and achievable. His message resonated strongly with students facing their own academic and personal challenges, reminding them that resilience is a skill that can be developed through experience and reflection, not just a trait you either have or do not have.

Many students commented afterwards that the talk inspired them to think differently about the obstacles they face, whether in their studies, in applications or in the wider world. What made Charlie’s visit particularly effective was the way he connected his extraordinary experiences to everyday life, making the lesson clear: perseverance, a positive outlook and a willingness to push beyond comfort zones are at the heart of personal growth. Westminster Tutors is grateful for Charlie’s time with us this term, and we hope his insights will continue to motivate and support our students throughout the year.
